Totems – Animal Medicine

Our sacred Path is a journey to the fullness of the human experience, in which we gain access to various qualities of consciousness that help us move forward.  In this way, the Universe is always speaking to us in a language we can understand.  As we travel along the Path, totems and medicines appear to help us to learn those qualities, reminding us of the parts of our potential experience we have yet to embody.

A very common way for this to happen is through the identification with animal medicine, sometimes known as totems.  It is common for beings to refer to the learning of certain qualities in relationship to their interpretation of the qualities of animals.

The examples of this are endless, all relative to the individual and their journey through their own experience.  For example, many traditions relate ‘deer medicine’ to be the qualities of gentleness, of quietude and the like, or ‘wolf medicine’ to represent teaching and family, ‘frog medicine’ to represent the movement between two words (Air and Water), the speaking of one’s Truth, etc.

In the fullness of our experience, the definitions of these qualities are relative to the traditions and the interpretations they come from, meaning ‘deer medicine’ or ‘frog medicine’ to not mean exactly the same thing from one tradition to another.  Like all aspects of the Incarnate plane, all manifestations occur relative to one’s prism of Self, the circumstances of one’s life that give rise to their particular lessons and personal evolution in this lifetime.
