“The North Star”

The Books of Fae 2006-12-12 – “Portal to the New Earth” “… One of the most pivotal moments on my heroic journey was the invocation of my magical familia, North the wolf. Such was the application of the principals of manifestation I was learning at the Academy, expressing themselves through the sequence of events and characters which led to North’s appearance in my life…”

New Moon Ritual

At the Academy, we studied a form of magic that worked with the Moon for manifestation. Where we would align our intentions with the natural forces, invoking the matrix of subtle energies at the beginning of the lunar cycle, holding the resonance with the gradual movement from the New Moon to the Full as the weaving progressed.

To invoke my familiar in my life, I used this technique, first setting my intention around the ritual table alongside the other two apprentices at the Academy, weaving together the various threads of elemental forces that defined my intention.

As I did this, I wrote down the qualities that I wanted in my companion. “Big”, “Strong”, “Healthy”, “Magical”, “Loyal” on a piece of paper (with crayon, actually), and folded that three by three times, placing it in the centre of the circle.

From there, we focused our energies, feeling our intentions ripple out into the field. According to the teachings, we would hold space, witnessing the unfoldment of the spell as the Moon made her way to blossom …

Waxing Moon Ritual

Of course it would happen at a place called “New Moon”

Suddenly I get an intuition that he’s going to give me shrimp instead of chicken and quickly say “Don’t give me shrimp”, to which he smiles and replies, “Of course not.”

I look down at my lunch and sure enough – shrimp.

There was a … slippery feeling. Like the events of the world were slipping around me. I could feel the scent of the moon in the afternoon air.

As the moon continued to grow in the night sky I noticed more and more manifestations of the energy of dogs in my field ….

I could feel something happening in the field, an energy building up in the subtle planes of life.

As I came to the home of Grandmother Wolf, it looked on the surface like an RV trailer parked on a lot next to vast pens for the animals.  Yet as my gaze shifted into the Mythica, I see it differently …

Like the forging of Talon by the avatar of Ogun I saw again how flimsy and shallow the perception of the on the surface of it’s skin was as what looked on the surface to be rough-worn caucasian woman living in a manufactured home shifted, becoming that of an ancient and wizened native american Goddess.

She hands three cubs to me. One almost immediately falls off my lap onto the couch. The second crawls away, and the third nuzzles up to me. I knew my answer immediately.

“What will you name him?” she asks.

Full transparency, I did consider naming him Fenris as I knew my purpose was to destroy the old paradigm in a wash of Shivic fire, and thought it appropriate. Yet I also knew my primary challenge was with the very nature of the Earth plane, and so I named him after the direction of earth on the wheel in accordance with the fae practices I was studying – North.

A few weeks later I picked him up, my true north and most loyal companion on the Quest, North – the Great Beast.
