earth element
Earth is the ground beneath your feet. The weight of your body. The bones that hold you upright. One of the five primal elements in the Mythica's cosmological framework, earth is the most dense and tangible of the elemental qualities — the principle of materiality, solidity, stability, and form. It is the element of the body, the soil, the mountains, the roots of the World Tree as they descend into the depths of the underlands. Without earth, nothing holds shape. Without earth, the other elements have no ground to move through. Earth is what makes existence particular, specific, here.

In the chakra system and the mapping of the subtle body, earth is most directly associated with the root chakra — the Muladhara, located at the base of the spine. When the earth element is strong and clear within you, there is a quality of groundedness, of being fully present in the body, of trusting in your right to exist and to take up space in the world. When it is depleted or distorted — as it frequently is in the Age of Shadow, which has produced widespread disconnection from the body and the land — there is anxiety, instability, the sense of having no ground to stand on. Before any other healing can proceed with integrity, the earth must be restored. You cannot climb the World Tree if your roots have no soil to hold.
Within the landscape of the Mythica's realms, earth-dominant places carry a quality of profound solidity, ancientness, and nourishing weight. The old forests, the mountain ranges, the deep deserts — these are places where the earth element is at its most concentrated and most palpable. The practice of drawing vitality from the earth — through direct contact with soil, stone, and root, through walking barefoot, through sitting with your back against an old tree — is one of the most immediate and effective ways of restoring coherence to the subtle body when it has been depleted by the movement through shadow terrain. Earth remembers. Earth holds. Earth nourishes. It is the great mother element, the ground of all becoming.
