northern lights

The sky is dancing. Rivers of green and violet and white move across the polar darkness — the aurora borealis, the northern lights — and something in the body recognizes it as sacred before the mind can explain why. The northern lights are one of the most breathtaking visible expressions of the elemental intelligence of Gaia and the cosmos: shimmering curtains of light that move across the polar night sky as the solar wind interacts with the earth's magnetic field. In the scientific understanding, charged particles from the sun are drawn toward the poles by the earth's magnetic field and collide with atmospheric molecules, releasing light at specific frequencies. But in the cosmology of the Mythica, this interaction speaks a deeper language: the solar wind as the essence of awareness — the radiant consciousness of the stars pouring toward the earth; the earth's magnetic field as the plane of forms, the organizing intelligence of Gaia that receives and structures that awareness into the configurations of the terrasphere. The northern lights are what happens where these two dimensions meet.

In the Mythica's cosmological framework, the northern lights are understood as the visual expression of the rainbow road — the spectrum of vibrational frequencies that constitutes both the architecture of the personal subtle body and the medium of passage through the different potential realities available along the World Tree. Stars and soil, awareness and form, the cosmic and the earthly: all interacting in a display of living light that makes the usually invisible dynamic of these two dimensions suddenly and dramatically visible. The aurora does not merely illustrate the rainbow road. It is what the rainbow road looks like when the conditions are right for it to become perceptible. The path has always been there. The lights simply show you its color.

The deeper teaching of the northern lights is the recognition that there is no separation between ourselves and the planet — that the same interaction of awareness and form, stars and soil, akashic light and earthly magnetism that produces the aurora in the sky is what produces the lived experience of consciousness in the human being. You are the northern lights expressed in human form: awareness moving through the specific magnetic field of your karmic configuration, producing the particular spectrum of experience that is your unique prism of perception. To witness the aurora is therefore not merely to observe a natural phenomenon external to yourself but to recognize a mirror of your own inner reality. The same fundamental interaction of light and field, cosmos and earth, is the essential structure of every heroic journey. Look up. Then look within. The lights are the same.
