Spiral of the Stars

The Convergence

New York City, 2002. Three figures whose work lives at the intersection of myth and material form find themselves together in the city:

  • Peter Fae — photographer of the sacred, documenting the invisible architecture of the real
  • James Vogel — sculptor and fabricator, one of Randy's lead makers, translating archetype into physical form
  • Randy Carfagno — master craftsperson of animated form, keeper of the lineage from Bil Baird and Jim Henson, whose studio is the living school of the tradition

This is an early node in the Mythica's NYC chapter — the Grove recognizing itself before the framework that would name it existed.

The Setting

Randy Carfagno Productions, New York, NY — the studio where creatures are born. Foam, fabric, wire, paint, and the knowledge of how to breathe presence into matter. The place where Broadway's most ambitious physical productions take shape, where the imaginal becomes touchable.

New York in 2002 is its own character: post-9/11, the city still carrying the weight of the previous year's fracture, but alive with the particular intensity that cities carry when they have been through fire. The creative underground of NYC — artists, makers, performers, the people who build the invisible architecture of culture — moving through that intensity.
