layers of the land
The earth is not merely a surface. It is a multidimensional field of awareness with distinct layers of subtlety, each corresponding to a layer of the self and each accessible as you develop the perceptual capacity to reach it. The layers of the land are the Mythica's map of the multiple simultaneous dimensions of reality through which the traveler moves on their heroic journey. In the cosmology of the Mythica, the material plane of earth has at least five primary layers, and as you move along the timeline of your adventure, you pass through all of these layers simultaneously. The physical events of the surface life are always also events in the subtler layers — and the deeper your awareness penetrates, the richer and more meaningful the landscape of your adventure becomes.
Moving from the outermost to the innermost, the five primary layers are: the Terrasphere — the surface layer of ordinary physical experience, the world of bodies, objects, and events as perceived by the ordinary senses; the Mnemosphere — the layer of memory, emotion, and personal subconscious patterning, where the stored impressions of past experience shape the quality of present perception; the Mythosphere — the layer of archetypal pattern and mythic structure, where the Great Story and its recurring themes are most directly perceptible; and the Aethersphere and beyond — the layer of elemental and etheric reality, the Ether Sea, the formless ground from which all the other layers arise. The axis mundi and the World Tree provide the structural framework through which movement between these layers occurs.
The practical significance of understanding the layers of the land is immense. When you arrive at a particular place on the physical earth, you are simultaneously arriving at corresponding positions in the mnemospheric, mythospheric, and aetheric layers — and the quality of those deeper positions is what determines the significance of the encounter. The genius loci of a place is the expression of all these layers simultaneously: the physical beauty of the landscape, the emotional resonance it carries, the archetypal patterns it embodies, and the elemental qualities it concentrates are all expressions of the same multidimensional reality perceived from different depths of awareness. As your inner layers clear and your capacity to perceive the subtler layers of the land increases, the entire landscape of the Quest becomes progressively more magical, more alive with the intelligence of the Great Story. The world is deeper than you know. You are deeper than you know. These are the same depth.
