Aces Wilde

As I grew up I continued to find resonance in world of stories, where the characters in the stories gave me some understanding of what I was experiencing through my senses. As it happened, one of these was a series edited by George R.R. Martin called Wild Cards.
It was my ace. An ability to shift between the dimensions of existence, and one which, like the stories, I would come to realize was intrinsically connected to my psycho-emotional state.
And this, I realized, was the power of stories. We identified with them, and in that declaration and affirmation of identity, gave birth to a gravity which created our manifest world from the inside out. With no resonant reflection from the mundane world, the comics became a foundation for me, a way of understanding and integrating the extremity of my sensory overload. I related to and identified with the superheroes, with those who had mutant powers and special gifts, blessed and cursed to curious placement in the everyday world.

More than this there was power. A real power which existed in the space between the letters, and to the gravities of meaning that existed in those spaces.

Yet I was Aces Wilde. Unable to control my gifts, the shifts in my consciousness splattering all over the place in a fugue of liquid colors. Wilde's power was great, he contained multitudes.
“They were. The comics gave me a metaphor to understand the nature of how I was perceiving the world. They were the most grounded thing I could understand.”
“There was a series on MTV around that time called ‘The Maxx’ which inspired me greatly, which spoke to the idea that there were multiples layers to the world existing simultaneously with each other, and which showed the progression of comic panels in video format …”
“Beautiful” says Calliope.
“Yes.” said Peter. “The Maxx really spoke to the idea of the surface and the subconscious worlds which for me related to the very substance of the comics, to the many dimensia which exist within the mortal condition – the many ways we perceive and interact with the world around us.”
Calliope’s quill captured his every word. “The thing about comics is, they’re a doorway into the dimensions of your self. The very substance of the idea that they are born from speaks to a language of legend which is mirrored in the potential of the self. While it may not appear the same way on the surface of the world, the vibrational substances invoked through the comics are very real indeed. They are the powers of the mind, what are known as the siddhi, as the occult, as our sensitivities and manipulations of energy. They are the mystic arts, the yogic arts, the disciplines and dimensions of human potential unbound.”
“But what if we all existed in the Outback? Each of us moving through our own subconscious world, facing the shadows and the traumas that defined our point of view from the inside-out? See that’s the thing – to me the Outback spoke to the aboriginal idea of the dreamtime, which in turn spoke to the very foundations of reality seen in their depths. It wasn’t about a delusional fantasy, but about seeing the layers of things which existed in the real.”

“The subconscious real or the actual real?” asked Calliope.
“That was the thing. There was the way we perceived the world and the way the world actually was, but the line between those things was blurred.”
“For you?”
“For everyone. We all lived in our own version of the city and the Outback, all defined by the perspective we had on the experiences of our life.”
“I see. And was this clear to you then?”
“No. Yet it was the seed of what I would come to understand later.”

1986 – The Territories

Amongst the many books that deeply inspired me as a childe there were a number which struck me deeply from Stephen King, all of which would prove to manifest themselves across the dimensions of my story as it unfolded, yet there were two which defined the quest, the first being a collaboration with author Peter Straub about a boy named Jack who travels from the east coast to the west through a mixture of the world as most people knew it and something else he called ‘The Territories’
In the series, Jack discovers he has the ability to ‘flip’, to move between the everyday world into the territories, a kind of parallel dimension where certain people possessed a ‘twinner’, a version of themselves which existed across both worlds.
The idea that time and space moved differently across the planes would prove to be one of the founding understandings of the underlands, not simply because it was the idea Stephen King used in the Territories but because it was a constant throughout many stories, throughout the collective divination into the nature of the dimensions of our existence.
It was a thing I felt in all of King’s books, and which had bled over into the Talisman, leaving ink footprints across the worlds. It was like he was connecting things, subconsciously, roving between dimensions that existed in the flickers between the pages.

The idea that time moved differently in the Territories would deeply influence the Mythica as I came to see the relative levels of impermanence that defined the events along my timeline. I would see that I lived i a world beneath the world, where the archetypes of our beingness lasted for far longer periods of time than how their ripples appeared on the surface. Movement across our path was a geometric one in this way, moving through the aka of the underlands through a flurry of experiences on the surface of the world.

The road was not merely a road. It was a portal, a way of moving between realities, one that I instinctively recognized as a means of navigating my way across the drift.

Somehow I knew, everything was the territories. The worlds that existed within films and media were an echo of something else. A fact within the fiction.
There was a talisman. A thing that could save the mother. That could open portals between worlds. And it was out there, somewhere.

It was these things, these things that revealed their relevance over time that truly anchored my sense of one’s mythos, of the story above and below the middle earth of our travels through the mortal plane, which gave me the sense of time, space and dimension that helped me navigate the twilight zone of my perception of the akasha.

Years later on the Quest I would travel the territories of the underlands with my beloved wolf, North ….
June 27, 1986 – Enter the Labyrinth


There was something special here. Something that spoke to my very soul, that sang of the ideas of Faerie, of the labyrinth of one’s life and the saving of the child at the center of one’s journey.
